Part 9: The Beginning
JOURNEY TO THE CROSS
PART 9
Mark 15:39-47
His story:
LIFE LESSONS FROM A SECRET DISCIPLE:
1. A WARNING TO THE SPIRITUALLY STRONG.
We’re never as strong as we think.
“Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed Him and cared for His needs. Many other women who had come up with Him to Jerusalem were also there.” Mark 15:40-41 (NIV)
2. ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE SPIRITUALLY WEAK.
“Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.” John 19:38 (NIV)
A small step toward God is better than no step.
“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
3. GOOD NEWS FOR ALL OF US.
It’s never too late to step forward toward God.
“It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the Kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.” Mark 15:42-43 (NIV)
“Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.” John 19:38-39 (NIV)
“So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.” Mark 15:46 (NIV)
It’s never too little to make a difference for God
“He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But He was buried like a criminal; He was put in a rich man’s grave.” Isaiah 53:9 (NLT)
