Part 8: The Death of Jesus
JOURNEY TO THE CROSS
PART 8
Mark 15:33-39
1. THE DARKNESS SHOWS THE SPIRITUAL DARKNESS WE ALL HAVE.
“Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.” Luke 22:53 (NIV)
“At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.” Mark 15:33 (NIV)
Spiritual darkness = Making anything in your life more important than God.
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” Hebrews 1:3 (NIV)
2. DARKNESS CAME DOWN ON JESUS.
“And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?’).” Mark 15:34 (NIV)
3. HOW JESUS REMOVES OUR SPIRITUAL DARKNESS.
“With a loud cry, Jesus breathed His last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Mark 15:37-38 (NIV)
The Centurion.
“And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how He died, he said, ‘Surely this Man was the Son of God!’” Mark 15:39 (NIV)
“It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, He has turned away and will not listen anymore.” Isaiah 59:2 (NLT)
“Yet it was our weaknesses He carried; it was our sorrows that weighed Him down. And we thought His troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for His own sins! But He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on Him the sins of us all.” Isaiah 53:4-6 (NLT)
