Part 7: The Problem of Guilt
MODERN PROBLEMS ANCIENT SOLUTIONS
PART 7
Psalm 51:1-10
The backstory: 2 Samuel 11-12.
TWO KEY DISTINCTIONS:
1. LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REMORSE AND REPENTANCE.
“Have mercy on me, O God, because of Your unfailing love. Because of Your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.” Psalm 51:1-3 (NLT)
The absolute main thing you’ve got to do if you want to meet God - repent.
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” 2 Corinthians 7:10 (NIV)
“Against You, and You alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in Your sight. You will be proved right in what You say, and Your judgment against me is just.” Psalm 51:4 (NLT)
“...But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!” Daniel 5:23b (NLT)
The primary foundational sin is: I know what is best for me and God, You don’t.
2. LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SECOND CHANCE AND A NEW HEART.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (NLT)
“You should not be surprised at My saying, ‘You must be born again.’” John 3:7 (NIV)
“Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, and You teach wisdom in the secret heart.” Psalm 51:6 (ESV)
Born again – to personally have the truth of the cross in Jesus Christ as something you trust in.
