Jeremiah 29:4-14

God’s instructions about the city:

  • Live and settle down there.

  • Don’t separate or withdraw from the city.

  • Sacrificially love the city and serve there.

“From one man He made all the people of the world. Now they live all over the earth. He decided exactly when they should live. And He decided exactly where they should live. God did this so that people would seek Him. And perhaps they would reach out for Him and find Him. They would find Him even though He is not far from any of us.” Acts 17:26-27 (NIRV)

“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the captives He has exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem: ‘Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away!’” Jeremiah 29:4-6 (NLT)

1. SEEK THE PEACE AND PROSPERITY OF YOUR CITY.

“And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:7 (NLT)

“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Galatians 5:14 (NIV)

2. PRAY TO THE LORD FOR YOUR CITY. 

“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Jeremiah 29:7 (NIV)

  • Pray for community leaders (City of Midland, schools, non-profits, businesses etc.) to lead with wisdom and integrity.

  • Pray for specific needs within your city. 

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)

3. DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO LOVE YOUR CITY. 

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” 1 John 3:16 (NIV)
