Part 4: Last Supper
JOURNEY TO THE CROSS
PART 4
Mark 14:22-31
1. THE LORD’S SUPPER HELPS US REMEMBER.
“On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, ‘Where do You want us to go and make preparations for You to eat the Passover?’” Mark 14:12 (NIV)
Exodus 12 — The Passover
“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, ‘Take it; this is My body. Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. ‘This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” He said to them.” Mark 14:22-24 (NIV)
2. THE LORD’S SUPPER CONNECTS YOU TO A NEW COMMUNITY.
“And in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, …for through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household.” Ephesians 2:16a,18-19 (NIV)
“But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:23-25 (NIV)
“So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.” 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 (NIV)
The meaning of the Lord’s Supper becomes real in community.
“‘You will all fall away,’ Jesus told them, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’ Peter declared, ‘Even if all fall away, I will not.’ ‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown Me three times.’ But Peter insisted emphatically, ‘Even if I have to die with You, I will never disown You.’ And all the others said the same.” Mark 14:27-31 (NIV)
3. HOW CAN THE TRUTH OF THE LORD’S SUPPER BE A TRANSFORMING POWER IN YOUR LIFE?
“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’” 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 (NIV)
Jesus loves you more than you will ever love Him.
“‘This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,’ He said to them. ‘Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.’” Mark 14:24-25 (NIV)
