Part 3: Chasing Knowing Right and Wrong
ECCLESIASTES
PART 3
Ecclesiastes 6:12; 12:13-14
RIGHT AND WRONG: OBJECTIVE OR SUBJECTIVE?
“For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?” Ecclesiastes 6:12 (NIV)
What is morality “under the sun”?
“A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.” Proverbs 21:2 (NIV)
No one can ultimately know what is right or wrong.
“They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” Ephesians 4:18 (NIV)
What is considered right or wrong can change.
“In the few days of our meaningless lives, who knows how our days can best be spent? Our lives are like a shadow. Who can tell what will happen on this earth after we are gone?” Ecclesiastes 6:12 (NLT)
There is no point in pursuing what is right
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 (NIV)
What is morality under God?
“For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NIV)
God is the judge of all things.
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV)
We get our standard of right and wrong from God.
“As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2 (NIV)
In Christ, we pursue what God says is right.
