Mark 10:17-27

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.” Mark 10:25 (ESV)

1. WHAT IS THE SPIRITUAL DANGER OF MONEY?

“As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up to Him and fell on his knees before Him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’” Mark 10:17 (NIV)

“‘Why do you call Me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good—except God alone.’ You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’ ‘Teacher,’ he declared, ‘all these I have kept since I was a boy.’” Mark 10:18-20 (NIV)

“Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ He said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.’ At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.” Mark 10:21-22 (NIV)

“Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, ‘How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!’ The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus said again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to

enter the Kingdom of God.’ The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, ‘Who then can be saved?’”  Mark 10:23-26 (NIV)

“And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to Him,  ‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.’” Mark 10:26-27 (ESV)

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” I Timothy 6:17-18 (NIV)

  • Money has the power to blind you spiritually.

2. WHY IS MONEY SPIRITUALLY DANGEROUS?

“And as He was setting out on His journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’” Mark 10:17 (ESV)

“And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.’” Mark 10:18 (ESV)

“And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’” Mark 10:21 (ESV)

  • You are called to change how you relate to your good things.

3. HOW DO YOU ESCAPE THE SPIRITUAL DANGER OF MONEY?

“Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. ‘There is still one thing you haven’t done,’ He told him. ‘Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.’”     Mark 10:21 (NLT)

  • Make money–be only money.

  • Have a generosity plan.

  • The only real way to know how generous you should be is the cross.
