Part 6: Jesus On Trial

JOURNEY TO THE CROSS

PART 6

Mark 15:1-15

1. PILATE - THE UNDECIDED.

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.” Mark 15:1 (NIV)

“‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ asked Pilate. ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied. The chief priests accused Him of many things. So again Pilate asked Him, ‘Aren’t You going to answer? See how many things they are accusing You of.’ But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.” Mark 15:2-5 (NIV)

“‘Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?’ asked Pilate, knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.” Mark 15:9-11 (NIV)

‘“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?’ Pilate asked. They all answered, ‘Crucify Him!’ ‘Why? What crime has He committed?’ asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify Him!’ When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. ‘I am innocent of this Man’s blood,’ he said. ‘It is your responsibility!’ All the people answered, ‘His blood is on us and on our children!’ Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.” Matthew 27:22-26 (NIV)

  • Feared the crowd more than Jesus.

  • Chose the safe way over the right way.

2. THE CROWD - GO  WITH THE FLOW.

“But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. ‘What shall I do, then, with the One you call the King of the Jews?’ Pilate asked them. ‘Crucify Him!’ they shouted. ‘Why? What crime has He committed?’ asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify Him!’ Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.” Mark 15:11-15 (NIV)

  • Chose their culture over Jesus.

  • Chose what seemed best for them.

3. BARABBAS - THE GUILTY.

  • Knew he was guilty.

“Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, ‘You brought me this Man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against Him. Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; as you can see, He has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish Him and then release Him.’ But the whole crowd shouted, ‘Away with this Man! Release Barabbas to us!’” Luke 23:13-18 (NIV)

  • Walked away free.

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.” Mark 15:15 (NIV)
