Part 6: Humble Together
DEEP ROOTS: JAMES
PART 6
James 3:18-4:12
1. HOW IMPORTANT IS CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY?
“And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” James 3:18 (ESV)
“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” James 4:1-3 (NIV)
Ways to fail to be part of a good Christian community:
If you don’t seek it.
If you fight and argue.
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message. That all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me.” John 17:20-21 (NIV)
2. WHAT ARE THE BARRIERS TO CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY?
You want to please yourself.
“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.” James 4:1-2 (NIV)
Spiritual pride.
“But He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’” James 4:6 (NIV)
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10 (NIV)
3. GOD’S PLAN TO HAVE A HUMBLE HEART.
“But He gives more grace. Therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:6-7 (ESV)
Live God’s upside down principle for life.
“But He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’” James 4:6 (NIV)
“We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” Romans 15:1 (ESV)
